Recite is a free Bible memorisation app made by one person, not a data business. This page explains, in plain English, what information the app handles, where it lives, and how you can delete it.
Who we are
Recite is developed and operated by David Gibson, based in the United Kingdom. For anything privacy-related, email hello@reciteapp.co.uk.
What we collect
When you create an account and use Recite, we store:
- Account details — your email address, a display name if you set one, and a securely hashed password (we never see or store your actual password). If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive your email and name from them.
- Your verses and progress — the verses you add, your practice sessions and scores, streaks, XP, badges, daily goal, and preferred translation. This is the heart of the app: it's how your progress follows you between sessions and devices.
- Feedback — anything you send through the in-app feedback form.
- Crash reports — if the app crashes, a technical report (device model, OS version, and what the app was doing) is sent to Sentry, our error-monitoring service, so we can fix it. These reports are not used to identify you.
Your voice never leaves the moment. When you recite, your speech is processed by your phone's built-in speech recognition. Recite never records audio, never stores audio, and no recording is ever sent to our servers. Only the resulting text of what you said is compared against the verse — and then discarded.
What we don't do
- No advertising, and no advertising trackers.
- No selling or renting your data to anyone, ever.
- No analytics profiles built about you across other apps or websites.
Where your data lives
Your account and progress are stored with Supabase, our database and authentication provider, hosted in the European Union (EU West). Crash reports are processed by Sentry on EU infrastructure. When you practise in a licensed translation (such as NIV, ESV or NLT), the app fetches verse text from Bible content providers (API.Bible and Crossway); those requests fetch scripture, not your personal information. Account emails (such as password resets) are delivered via Resend.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, everything goes with it — see below.
Deleting your account
Open Recite and go to Profile → Delete account. This permanently erases your account, verses, progress, streaks, XP and badges from our systems. It cannot be undone. If you'd rather we do it for you, or you can no longer access the app, email hello@reciteapp.co.uk and we'll delete your account within 30 days.
Feedback you've sent may be retained after deletion, but with your account identity removed, so it is no longer linked to you.
Notifications
Daily practice reminders are optional, off by default, and scheduled on your device. Turn them on or off any time in Profile settings or your phone's notification settings.
Children
Recite is suitable for all ages, shows no advertising, and collects no more from younger users than from anyone else. If you're a parent or guardian and would like a child's account removed, email us and we'll take care of it.
Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law (UK GDPR), you have the right to access the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or receive a copy of it. Email hello@reciteapp.co.uk to exercise any of these. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in any meaningful way, we'll update this page and the date at the top. Significant changes will be flagged in the app.
